Introduction

The NHMRC Student Research Competition is an amazing opportunity for delegates to showcase their medical student research to other medical students. Show your peers what is achievable as a student researcher… and win $1000! All finalists will get to present research on a national stage.

Purpose

This award aims to encourage and promote medical research amongst students by rewarding the best research presentations at the AMSA’s annual national conference - AMSA Convention 2010.

Prizes

1st prize - $1000

2nd prize, 3rd prize – the latest editions of best selling medical text books

Eligibility

• The student must be a medical student (current or deferred) attending an Australian or New Zealand University.

• The student must be first author for published research or the primary researcher on unpublished research (with appropriate supporting documentation).

• Research must be original work.

• Research must have been undertaken whilst at medical school.

• Research in all areas and disciplines of medicine are welcome to apply.

• Finalists agree to present their research on Tuesday 7th July (see below).

Application Procedure

• Abstracts are due on the 31st of May. Abstracts must be accompanied with a letter from your supervisor confirming your involvement in the research. Email abstracts to: convention10.academic@amsa.org.au

• Successful abstracts shall be notified by the 15th of June and invited to present their research at the AMSA National Convention.

• PowerPoint presentations need to be received by Monday 29th of June. Email these to: convention10.academic@amsa.org.au

Assessment Criteria

The research must show excellence and originality of scientific content, as well as presenting the content in a clear and simple manner and having a visual impact on the audience.

At Convention

The successful applicants are required to deliver a short (10 minute) PowerPoint presentation summarising their research as part of the Convention Academic Program on Tuesday 7th July (Plenary Hall, 1330 hours).

At Convention the research presentations will be judged by leading medical researchers and last year’s competition winner. The 2010 winner will be announced during the conference. This award is one of the most generous and prestigious awards available to medical student researchers in Australia and New Zealand and would form a mighty fine addition to a Curriculum Vitae!
